Many different species of grass are available for your lawn, but choosing the right turf for your lawn depends on its intended use, you will need a coarse grasses if your going to use it for active sports etc, or a much finer, softer grass for a more relaxing or ornamental lawn.
You need to get to work on your lawn in the Spring time or early summer. If your laying a new lawn, its beneficial to add a fresh layer of topsoil to the ground.
If you choose to sew the grass seeds yourself and save some money, rather that going the popular way of today, laying turf, remember all the hard work, preperation and that it will take much longer to achieve your lawn as it does take time for it to grow and usually needs daily watering, or you can end up with a dry frazzled dead lawn.
